Mailing lists and subscribers

Lists in Chorum

A mailing list is a group of people you send email broadcasts to. Chorum has two kinds:

  • Static list: you decide who is on it. People join by signing up through a form, being imported, or being added by hand. Use it for newsletters and anything people opt into.
  • Smart segment: a rule over your CRM contacts, such as "all leads in Leeds". Members are worked out fresh each time the list is used, so it never needs manual upkeep.

Every list shows how many people are Subscribed, Unsubscribed and Bounced, how many campaigns used it and how many forms feed it.

Create a list

  1. Go to Marketing, Email, Mailing Lists and create a new list (or use Create a list on the Marketing Overview).
  2. Choose Static list or Smart segment.
  3. Give it a List name, an optional Description so your team knows what it is for, and a Colour to spot it quickly.
  4. For a smart segment, set the rule. The CRM contact filter rule lets you filter by Contact status (for example Lead or Active), City and Country. Start typing a city or country to pick from the values already in your CRM.
  5. Choose Create list.

Add people to a static list

Open the list and use the buttons on the Subscribers tab.

Import a CSV file

  1. Choose Import CSV.
  2. Upload a file or paste the contents. The simplest format is one email address per line. You can also use a header row with the columns email, name (optional) and status (optional).
  3. Check the preview, then import.

Duplicates are skipped, so importing the same file twice does not create repeat entries. Addresses that have bounced before are left out to protect your sending reputation.

Import from your CRM

Choose Import from CRM to add every CRM contact that has an email address. You will be asked to confirm first. If you only want some contacts, use a smart segment instead.

Add one person

Choose Add subscriber, enter their Email and optionally their Name.

Grow the list with forms

The best lists are built from people who chose to join. Open the Linked forms tab to see which forms feed this list. From there you can build a Chorum form, or copy the Public submit URL so an external tool can send sign-ups straight into the list. The tab includes short setup steps for Typeform, Jotform, WordPress (Contact Form 7 or Gravity Forms) and any service that can send a webhook. See Forms and lead capture.

Track growth

The Growth tab charts new subscribers over a time window you choose, and breaks down which forms they came from. Use it to see which sign-up forms and landing pages work best.

Unsubscribes and bounces

  • Every broadcast includes an unsubscribe link. When someone uses it, they are marked Unsubscribed and are not emailed again from that list.
  • When an email cannot be delivered, the address is recorded on Marketing, Email, Bounce List with the date it last bounced and where the bounce came from. Bounced addresses are skipped automatically on future sends.
  • Never re-import people who unsubscribed. If someone asks to rejoin, let them sign up again through a form so you have a record of their consent.

Edit or tidy a list

  • Search the Subscribers tab by email or name, and remove anyone who should not be there.
  • The Settings tab lets you rename the list, change its description and colour, and see when it was created and last updated.
  • For a smart segment, change the rule from the rule tab. The new rule applies the next time the list is used.

Lists for your customers

Lists belong to the workspace they were created in. Switch to a customer's workspace (top of the Marketing pages) to build lists for that customer. Their subscribers stay separate from yours and from every other customer's.
